Kaancheevaram Review

Has been wanting to watch this movie from the national awards declaration, finally managed to watch it last week.

Priyan takes you to the pre independence ages of Kaancheevaram a city renowned for crafting world famous silk materials.Vengadan(Prakshraj) the silk weaver is an ordinary man working under........ the landlord to weave silk sarees for him to sale. The weavers then were exploited to the core by not being allowed have a share of silk and being poorly paid.Vengadan weaved the best sarees in Kaancheevaram....@ 4-5 rs while the landlord sold it to the British for 700-1000rs.

Those days silk was affordable only to the rich and never ever would a weaver get to own a silk clothing.Vengadan had a failed dream of bringing his bride(shreya) home dressed in silk. But this doesnt halt Vengadan from promising(a custom of giving a promise in the ears of the newly born) his daughter a silk saree on her wedding.Fellow weavers and his wife accused him of having given a false promise to his child and feared that would bring ill fate to the child. But Vengadan was determined that he started collecting Silk threads right from his daughters childhood. But later came a stage when he couldnt afford buying silk anymore that he started stealing threads to his home from his work place.Weavers were checked for any sort of such malpractices but Vengadan was clever enough to stuff up his mouth with the silk thread balls and carry them home.Life went on ,his daughter had grown up and Vengadan wasn't yet caught of cheating. One fine day a communist comes to kaancheevaram(Communism was banned in India then) he spreads his ideologies to Vengadan and friends and they decide to go on strike against the landlords exloitations.Vengadan being highly infulenced by these though emerges to be thier leader but soon he realizes that his daughters wedding is getteing nearer and he is running out of Silk to weave up the rest of the Saaree.Hesitantly he tries to convince his fellow workers to give up the strike and go back to work ,so that he could get silk for the Sareee.....Does he succeed in geting the Saree by the wedding day or does he get caught is what the rest of the story is all about.

Told in a typical colour tone the movie is sure to move all sensible movie lovers.Prakash Raj has put in a very credible performance as Vengadan. The other casts have put up a realistic show as well.Priyadarshans craftsmanship ,the camera, the songs ,the BGM all plays its part in etching out a well made celluloid show.

Verdict :Recommended for all Sensible Movie lovers...................
