Unnai Pol Oruvan--Its Kamal Show--Review

Saw Unnaipol Oruvan First day first show ........

Having seen 'A Wednesday',Unnaipol oruvan was an oppurtunity for me to see Kamal and Laal share the screen space and let me tell you it is the only differing quotient.Thank god that being the tamil version they were not tempted to add crass comedy or other masala stuffs that almost maintains the mood created in the hindi version.
Just when here and there the movie......tends to lag off it comes back strongly some intense scenes or dialogues that keeps your intrest alive. With kamal as Unnaipol oruvan the common man ,the movie starts off ditto of the Hindi version, with kamal placing the bombs on nooks and corners of the city and then calling up the commisioner of police Mr maarar(Mohanlal). There after its the police - terrorist game till the interval The first half shows Mohanlal as the Negotiator and Kamal dictating terms and there after its all the Kamal show all the way.Maarar allows the prisoners to be released and is sent along with 2 of his trusted officers to the airport(as per Kamals demands).I dont wish to go further into the details of the story as it would spoil the intrests of the few those who havent watched A wednesday.

Performance wise Kamal really steals the show with his voice and screen presence and is up to the standards as set by Nasseruddin Shah. The only thing that might rate his performance below that of Nasseruddin Shah is that he looks a powerful man and the common man feel might not be conveyed at times.Still kamal has compensated that to an extend with his voice modulation and movements.Mohanlaal has very little to do and plays the second fiddle to kamals innings.Still laal has performed credibly enough to fit to the role of Maarar. The fluency that he had in his body language was missing in his dialogue delivery though ofcourse they try to justify it presenting him as a malayalee officer(this might remind you of company). But this is projected out especially in the final stages of the movie where Laal has to deliver louder powerful dialogues.Other casts get to share the screen space only for a lesser span though they provide thier own significance to the plot. The tough guy police (enacted by Jimmy Shergil in hindi) does impress here too(donno his name).Direction wise Chakri Toleti had little to do as it was mostly scene by scene from a work that had been done well.BGM music by Shruthi fits to the overall mood of the movie as well.

On the whole:The movie work out in terms of creating the mood and feeling and its acceptance remains to be seen as there were boos in the climax and people were amazed to see the interval title without much of a hapenings in the 1st half. There were applauses for the intros, Kamals counter dialogues to Laal and fans applauses to Laals english dialogues.

My verdict : Recommended to those who don't expect typical tamil masala stuffs and those who haven't watched A wednesday.
